Does a US citizen need a passport to travel from one European country to another?

I need to travel from Portugal to Italy, but I already used both entries on my dual-entry Portuguese visa. Will I need my passport if I travel round trip from Portugal to Italy?Does a US citizen need a passport to travel from one European country to another?I also don't understand what you mean. If you are a US citizen, then (at least for tourist travel anyway) you don't need a visa to visit Italy or Portugal for a max of 90 days out of 180 days. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Visa_Waiver鈥?/a>

You will however need a passport for identity purposes. If you fly, you will need to provide your passport. On the train/bus, you may (but not always) be requested for it as well

All foreigners in Italy are required by law to have an ID with them at all times http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_do鈥?/a> so you would need to show it anyway upon request.

If you are a foreign legal resident in Portugal and have a visa for this, then the terms of this visa dictate whether you can travel onwards or not, and it may be wise therefore to check with the Portugese immigration dept or Italian embassy.Does a US citizen need a passport to travel from one European country to another?yes passports are needed every time you get out of the country and visit another one. definitely yes you do need your passport.Does a US citizen need a passport to travel from one European country to another? There are a group of countries known as the "Schengen" countries after the Schengen agreement (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schengen_Ag鈥?/a> where you theoretically do not need a passport to cross boarders by land (countires are : Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.)

But if you fly you will need a passport anyway for airport security.
