Does luggage travel with you across different airlines?

I'm from Canada, and am planning a trip to Singapore; but the best travel itinerary I can find takes me from Canada to China on Air Canada, and then from China to Singapore on Singapore Airlines. My concern is the hassle of having to get my checked luggage when I arrive in China, and then re-checking in on Singapore Airlines, and re-checking my luggage.

So 1) Will I be able to check in on both airlines (and get my boarding passes) when leaving Canada? 2) Will my baggage travel with me all the way to Singapore?

Rather, what matters is whether these two airlines have interline baggage and ticketing agreements. If two airlines do have these agreements, then the first airline will be able to check in a passenger on the second airline's flights, as well as transfer luggage between the two.



According to the page linked below, interline ticketing agreements exist between Air Canada and Singapore -- this means that you'd be able to check in for both flights with the Air Canada agent when you check in, and your luggage would be checked all the way through to Singapore. If your ticket is from Canada to Singapore (one ticket) then your luggage will be checked through to your destination, if however you have two tickets Canada to China then china to Singapore then you may have to re check in your luggage.
