China is a place where man independent travellers decide to join a tour group.
This is for 2 reasons
1. There is a lot to see
2. Getting around can be a bit confusing sometimes
However for independent travelers staying in backpacker orientated places means they will help you buy train tickets, book local tours and so on.
Shanghai is not really a backpacker friendly city, but head off to Hangzhou, Suzhou and Nanjing there are plenty of backpacker hostels and a lot to see just by walking around.
The preferred backpacker route is actually Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Guillin and Yangshou, Kunming, Dali, Lijiang and Shangrila. These cities are connected by buses that often pull up to the door of backpacker hotels, lots of English speaking waiters in restaurants and shops.
