What is the cheapest way to travel abroad for a gap year?

I have found myself with a spare year, I would like to travel abroad but have no money and after researching volunteer work atc it seems that you are usually required to pay for the privilege. I by no means expect something free (although i wouldn't complain if it came along) and am ready and willing to work once abroad. Does anybody know the cheapest way that this would be possible? What is the cheapest way to travel abroad for a gap year?you and everybody else, I'm afraid - travel is a privilege, not a right. Remember that you need tickets and insurance as well as accommodation. If you want to work in Australia and NZ (for example) you also need to pay for the working visas, and there is a fair bit of competition. You can do things like WWOOF (working for board) but you still need money.
