What is the cheapest way to travel in Europe?

My friend and I are backpacking, and we want to optimize our travel experience by going to as many places as possible for as little as possible. Any cheap trains or buses maybe? What is the cheapest way to travel in Europe? You should look into the Eurailpass. The basic pass allows unlimited use of the trains almost everywhere in Europe for a certain period of time. They can be a very good deal if you are traveling for a long time or if you are under 26 (you get a youth pass for about 2/3 the cost). They have cheaper rail passes that only cover certain countries, or that only allow a certain number of travel days (like free travel for any 10 days in a 2 month period - this lets you save your pass for the most expensive trips, and you pay out of pocket for short or cheap trips). A lot of the rail passes also cover certain ferry rides, like the ferry from Italy to Greece.

Trains are a lot more pleasant than buses, but buses can often be cheaper. Look at the bus company Eurolines.

Also, there are a lot of budget airlines in Europe that can have dirt-cheap fares. If you are going long-distance, they are often cheaper than the train, and can save you a lot of time versus having to get all the way to places like Greece or Portugal by train or bus. The budget airlines Ryanair, Easyjet, and Air Berlin are some of the largest, with the most extensive route networks.

Finally, Eastern Europe is a lot cheaper than Western Europe. If you are on a very low budget, you may consider spending a lot of your time in Eastern Europe. What is the cheapest way to travel in Europe? It depends on when you travel as you can hit some good bargins now and then.

For a comparing a range of cheap airlines see www.skyscanner.net. If you go to places in the off seasons you can get some cheap flights eg going to winter destinations in the summer or vice versa, out of school holiday times is also better too.

for buses, probably the best is www.eurolines.com, I got a cheap deal eg 14 GBP from London to Dublin, getting a bus overnight means an uncomfortable night BUT it saves you accommodation costs!!!
