What kind of life stly change is involved in have a ankle replacement done? I ask because my mom has been told she has to have one in the next 3 years. Well a replacement or fusion. She did not ask a lot of question yet, she is putting it off as long as possible so i am looking for info for her. What kind of motion due you still have after ankle replacement?I am in the same boat as your mother. I shattered my ankle in 1994 and I have been waiting for a GOOD ankle replacement. There isn't one yet. There have been a LOT of problems with the one out there now. Rejection, infection.
She does NOT want to get her ankle fused. To fuse the ankle, they have to remove the ankle joint all together. That means she could NEVER have an ankle replacement. If she can nurse her ankle along for a while, they will improve this replacement. I'll know about it--besides my personal interest in this--it's what I do, as well. What kind of motion due you still have after ankle replacement?I have recently had a knee replacement myself...and am not familiar with ankle replacement (have never heard of it)...
WebMD is a great website to go to learn about medical conditions, treatment and medicines...I would check them out of I were you and your Mom. Three years is a long time, and many new procedures will be available by then...I would not worry so much about something so far down the line...
And a little bit of advice....ALWAYS ask questions when your Dr is explaining something you need..or need to take...if you don't understand what he/she is talking about.
Back to my "new" knee...I can do almost everything I did before...my new knee moves like my natural knee did...It has taken a few months, though, to be able to use it properly (a lot of therapy)...
