When is the best time to travel through DC over the 4th of July weekend?

We are planning on driving Northbound on I-95 Saturday morning, and are kind of up in the air about when to return Monday, July 4 (2011). We have two little kids, and it's a disaster being stuck in traffic. Am willing to travel unconventional times if it's bound to be crazy.
